Gas cooktop burner won't light, or won't stop clicking
Most burner problems on a gas range are about the spark reaching the gas: moisture, spills or misaligned parts. Safe checks come first; anything to do with the gas supply is for a licensed gas technician.

Safe checks before you book
- Dry it out. After a boil-over or cleaning, the igniter can be wet. Remove the grate and cap and let the burner dry for a few hours.
- Seat the cap. The burner cap must sit flat and centred on the base. A cap that is slightly off stops the flame from spreading or keeps the igniter clicking.
- Clean the ports. Clear food from the small holes around the burner with a dry toothbrush or a pin. Don't use water on the igniter.
- Compare burners. If one burner fails and the others work, the issue is local to that burner. If none light, the problem is upstream.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Wet or dirty igniter | Often fixed by drying and cleaning. |
|---|---|
| Spark switch | A switch behind the knob that stays closed and keeps the clicking going. |
| Igniter or spark module | A cracked igniter or failing module. |
| Gas supply | If no burner lights, the supply or regulator needs a licensed gas technician. |
When to stop and call
Any smell of gas. Leave the building and call 911 or Enbridge Gas from outside.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
