What we repair

  • Won't drain or leaves water in the drum
  • Won't spin, or spins with loud banging
  • Leaks during fill, wash or drain
  • Door won't unlock
  • Error codes and dead controls
  • Coin- and card-operated machines in buildings

Repair or replace?

Pumps, door locks, switches, belts and inlet valves are usually worth repairing. A failed tub bearing on an older machine is the one the finding often flags as a replacement decision, because the labour is heavy.

Northway doesn't sell appliances, so the recommendation is only about your machine. Most major brands are covered; units still under the manufacturer's warranty should go to the manufacturer first.

Common washer problems we fix

What each symptom usually means. The technician confirms the cause with tests before replacing anything, and the finding names the part.

Won't turn on or nothing happens

No lights at all points to power, the outlet or the main board; lights but no start is more often the lid switch or door lock refusing to confirm the door is shut. Read the full guide

Water left in the drum

A pump jammed by a coin or sock, a clogged coin trap on a front-loader, or a kinked drain hose. The machine usually stops and shows a drain code. Read the full guide

Won't spin, or clothes come out soaking

If it can't drain it won't spin, so we check that first. After that: worn drive belt or coupler, a failed lid lock, or a motor control fault. Read the full guide

Agitator or drum doesn't move during wash

On top-loaders the agitator dogs or the motor coupler wear out; on front-loaders a drive belt or the motor itself. Read the full guide

Door stays locked after the cycle

The lock waits until the water level sensor says the drum is empty, so a drain problem can look like a lock problem. Otherwise the lock assembly has failed. Read the full guide

Leaking onto the floor

A torn door boot, a loose pump or hose clamp, a cracked inlet hose at the back, or too much soap foaming over. Where the water appears tells us where to start. Read the full guide

Very slow to fill, or won't fill

Inlet hoses with closed taps or clogged screens, or an inlet valve that no longer opens. Common in rural homes on wells, where sediment builds up. Read the full guide

Fills with too much water

Usually a valve that doesn't close fully or a faulty water level sensor. Turn the taps off if water keeps coming in after the cycle ends.

Loud banging or roaring in the spin

A roar that gets louder with speed is the tub bearing. A thump each turn is often a loose counterweight or a coin trapped between the drums. Read the full guide

Shaking or walking across the floor

Uneven floor or feet, worn shock absorbers or suspension rods, or shipping bolts left in a new machine. Read the full guide

Stops part-way through a cycle

A drain, fill or unbalance fault the control is reacting to, or a part that cuts out when it heats up. The error code is the best clue. Read the full guide

Smells musty or of sewage

Residue in the door boot and drain filter, low-temperature washes, or a drain standpipe that lets sewer gas back up. Read the full guide

Shows an error code

Most codes point to drain, fill, door lock or unbalance problems. Look yours up in our washer code guide, then tell us the code when you book. See the washer code guide

Repairs we do on washers

How a visit works

  1. You send a request. Your phone, email and the service address are all we need. Add the appliance and what's wrong if you like.
  2. A technician gets in touch. As soon as possible, by phone or text, to set a time that works for you.
  3. The technician diagnoses. They find the cause and write it down: what failed, the parts, labour and total price, and whether the repair is worth doing.
  4. You decide. Approve the written quote and the diagnostic is free: it comes off when the repair is completed. Say no, and you pay only the diagnostic ($89 + tax for a home electric appliance).

Washer repair questions

How much does washer repair cost in Ottawa?

The diagnostic is free when you go ahead with the repair. If you decide not to, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance. Either way, you get the full repair price in writing before any work.

Do you fix both front-load and top-load washers?

Yes, front-load and top-load, including stacked laundry centres. Tell us the model so the technician can check part availability first.

Is it worth repairing my washer or should I replace it?

Pumps, door locks, lid switches, inlet valves and belts are usually worth fixing. A failed tub bearing on an older front-loader often isn't, because it means taking the whole drum apart. The written finding says which side your repair falls on.

Why does my front-load washer smell?

Detergent and lint collect in the door boot folds and the drain filter. Running a hot cleaning cycle, wiping the boot dry and leaving the door open helps. If the smell is sewage, the drain connection is the likely cause.

Can I use the washer before the technician comes?

If it is leaking or the drum is full of water, no. Turn off the taps and leave it. If it runs but won't spin, you can usually keep using it carefully for light loads.

How long does a washer repair take?

Many repairs are done on the first visit if the part is on the truck. If a part has to be ordered, we give you a date and come back to fit it without a second diagnostic charge.

Do you repair washers still under the manufacturer's warranty?

We can, but it is usually better to call the manufacturer first, because their warranty repair costs you nothing. If they can't come quickly, we'll explain what our visit would cost.

What warranty do I get?

Replaced parts are covered for 90 days. Labour cover is written on your quote.
