What we repair

  • Not cold enough
  • Heavy frost or ice build-up
  • Running all the time
  • Not running at all
  • Noisy fans or compressor
  • Door or lid not sealing

Repair or replace?

Fans, defrost parts, start relays and gaskets are usually worth replacing. Sealed-system faults on older freezers often aren't, and the finding says so plainly.

Northway doesn't sell appliances, so the recommendation is only about your machine. Most major brands are covered; units still under the manufacturer's warranty should go to the manufacturer first.

Common freezer problems we fix

What each symptom usually means. The technician confirms the cause with tests before replacing anything, and the finding names the part.

Not freezing or food softening

A failed fan, a defrost system that has iced over the coil, or a start relay that won't let the compressor run. Read the full guide

Heavy frost or ice inside

A door or lid gasket that no longer seals, a door left ajar, or a defrost fault on frost-free models. Read the full guide

Runs all the time

Dusty condenser coils, a warm garage or a gasket leak making it work harder than it should. Read the full guide

Clicking and not starting

The compressor start relay or overload clicks when the compressor can't start. Read the full guide

Loud or unusual noise

Fan blades hitting ice, a worn fan motor, or a compressor straining. Read the full guide

How a visit works

  1. You send a request. Your phone, email and the service address are all we need. Add the appliance and what's wrong if you like.
  2. A technician gets in touch. As soon as possible, by phone or text, to set a time that works for you.
  3. The technician diagnoses. They find the cause and write it down: what failed, the parts, labour and total price, and whether the repair is worth doing.
  4. You decide. Approve the written quote and the diagnostic is free: it comes off when the repair is completed. Say no, and you pay only the diagnostic ($89 + tax for a home electric appliance).

Freezer repair questions

What temperature should my freezer be?

Health Canada recommends −18 °C or colder. Put a thermometer between packages and check after a few hours.

Do you repair chest freezers in garages?

Yes. Many freezers aren't designed for an unheated garage, though; if yours sits in one, the finding will say whether that's part of the problem.

How long will food last if my freezer stops?

A full freezer with the lid closed usually keeps food frozen for about two days, a half-full one for about one. Don't open it to check.

Is a freezer worth repairing?

Fans, relays and defrost parts are usually worth it. A failed sealed system on an inexpensive chest freezer often isn't, and we'll tell you before you pay for it.
