Before you call: three safe checks

  1. Is it cooling at all? Put a glass of water in the middle shelf for a few hours and check it with a kitchen thermometer. Aim for about 4 °C; above 7 °C, food is at risk.
  2. Look at the coils and vents. Blocked internal vents (packed shelves) and dusty condenser coils are common causes of weak cooling.
  3. Listen. A compressor that clicks on and off every few minutes, or a fan that has gone silent, is useful to mention when you book.

Food at risk? Keep the doors shut, move essentials to a cooler with ice, and tell us it is urgent when you book or call.

What we usually find

Not cooling, freezer still cold

Often an evaporator fan, a defrost fault that has iced over the coil, or a damper. The written finding says which, with the part and price.

Water on the floor or under the crisper

Usually a blocked defrost drain or a water-line connection for the dispenser or ice maker.

Frost building up

A door gasket that no longer seals, or a defrost heater, sensor or control that has failed.

Sealed-system faults

A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor is the expensive end of fridge repair. You get that price before anything is opened up, and on an older unit the finding may well recommend replacing it instead. A certified refrigeration technician handles any refrigerant work.

Fridge repairs we do

Repair or replace?

Three things decide it: what the repair costs in total, how the rest of the fridge is holding up (gaskets, shelves, compressor noise), and whether parts are still available for your model. The technician writes all three on the finding along with a plain recommendation. Northway has no appliances to sell you, so the advice is only about your fridge. Choose not to repair and your cost stops at the diagnostic: $89 + tax for a home fridge.

Fridge repair questions

What temperature should my fridge be?

Health Canada recommends 4 °C or colder in the fridge and −18 °C in the freezer. Check with a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf.

How much does fridge repair cost in Ottawa?

The diagnostic is free when you go ahead with the repair. If you decide not to, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance. Either way, you get the full repair price in writing before any work.

Is it worth repairing my fridge?

Fans, defrost parts, relays, valves and boards are usually worth it. Sealed-system repairs (compressor or refrigerant) on an older fridge often aren't. The finding gives you a plain recommendation.

Can you fix it in one visit?

Often, when the part is on the truck. Model-specific parts like control boards may need ordering; we give you a date and come back to fit it.

What should I do with the food while I wait?

Keep the doors shut. A closed fridge keeps food cold for about four hours; move milk, meat and medicine to a cooler with ice if it will be longer.

Do you repair commercial refrigerators?

Yes, reach-ins, under-counter units, prep tables and walk-ins, through our business service.

Do you do refrigerant (sealed-system) work?

Refrigerant work is done by a certified refrigeration technician. Because it is the expensive end of fridge repair, you get the price before anything is opened.
