Safe checks before you book

  1. Thermometer test. Preheat to 180 °C, wait 20 minutes, read an oven thermometer on the middle rack, then again ten minutes later.
  2. Calibration setting. Many electronic ovens let you offset the temperature in the settings.
  3. Door seal. A damaged gasket lets heat out.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

Temperature sensorOut of range; the most common cause on electronic ovens.
ThermostatOn older dial ovens.
Element or igniterWeak heating.
Control boardLess common.

When to stop and call

Not urgent unless it overheats with the controls off.

What the visit costs

The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
