Safe checks before you book

  1. When does it leak?. Watch one cycle with the area dry. Note whether water appears during filling, washing or draining.
  2. Hoses at the back. Feel the hot and cold inlet hoses at both ends. Rubber hoses that bulge or weep should be replaced; braided steel hoses last longer.
  3. Front-load: the door seal. Wipe the rubber boot around the door and look for tears or anything trapped in the folds. Detergent build-up there can also cause drips.
  4. Too much soap. Excess suds, especially regular detergent in a high-efficiency washer, can overflow. Use the amount the machine calls for.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

Inlet hose or valveA leak during fill usually comes from a hose washer, a cracked hose or the water inlet valve.
Door bootA torn front-load gasket leaks during the wash.
Pump or drain hoseA leak during draining points to the pump seal, the pump housing or a hose clamp.
Tub seal or bearingWater with a rusty tint and a rumbling spin can mean the tub seal has failed; the finding will say whether it is worth repairing.

When to stop and call

A steady flow you can't stop. Close both taps behind the washer and switch it off.
