Safe checks before you book
- Gas: pilot. Is the pilot lit? Follow the manufacturer's lighting procedure only.
- Electric: breaker. Check the dedicated breaker.
- High-limit reset. Many fryers have a manual high-limit reset; if it trips again, stop and call.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Thermopile or thermocouple | Weak signal shuts the gas valve. |
|---|---|
| Gas valve or ignition module | On electronic-ignition fryers. |
| Thermostat or probe | Temperature control faults. |
| Elements or contactors | On electric fryers. |
When to stop and call
Smell of gas, or a high-limit that keeps tripping. Shut it down. If you smell gas, leave and call 911 or Enbridge Gas from outside.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $149 + tax per commercial unit.
