Dryer door won't latch, or the door switch fails
If the dryer won't start unless you hold the door, or the door pops open, the latch or the door switch is the usual suspect.

Safe checks before you book
- Look at the catch. Check the latch on the door and the strike on the cabinet for broken plastic or a missing spring.
- Listen for the click. Closing the door should click the door switch. No click often means a failed switch or a broken actuator.
- Hinges. A sagging door can miss the latch; check the hinge screws.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Door catch or strike | Small, inexpensive parts that break with use. |
|---|---|
| Door switch | Fails open, so the dryer thinks the door is open. |
| Hinge or door alignment | The door no longer lines up with the switch. |
When to stop and call
Never tape or wedge a door switch to force the dryer to run.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
