Dryers
Dryer needs two or three cycles to dry a load
If the dryer heats but loads still take forever, the problem is usually the air path rather than the dryer itself.

Safe checks before you book
- Feel the outside vent. Strong warm air should push the vent flaps open. Weak or no airflow points to lint in the duct.
- Look at the duct. Thin foil or vinyl duct crushed behind the dryer restricts air badly. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, kept short with few bends, works best.
- Load size and spin. Very large loads, or clothes that weren't spun well by the washer, take much longer. If clothes come out of the washer dripping, look at the washer.
- Moisture sensor. Many dryers stop early when the sensor bars inside the drum are coated with softener residue. Wipe them with a little rubbing alcohol.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Restricted vent or duct | The most common cause. Cleaning the duct and replacing crushed sections often fixes it. |
|---|---|
| Weak heating | A failing element or a cycling thermostat that cuts heat too early. |
| Blower or seals | A loose blower wheel or worn drum seals that pull in room air instead of hot air. |
When to stop and call
The top of the dryer gets very hot, or you smell burning. A restricted vent is a fire risk.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
