Electric stove burner not heating, or stuck on high
Coil and glass cooktop elements fail in a few predictable ways, and the switch behind the knob is as common a cause as the element itself.

Safe checks before you book
- Coil tops: swap elements. With the range off and cool, swap a dead coil into a working socket. If it works there, the socket or switch is the issue.
- Glass tops: watch the glow. Partial glow, or none, on one zone.
- Stuck on high. A burner that only heats on full points to the switch.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Element | Broken or burnt coil, or a failed radiant element. |
|---|---|
| Infinite switch | The control behind the knob. |
| Terminal block or wiring | Burnt connections on coil sockets. |
When to stop and call
Sparking, a burning plastic smell, or a burner that won't turn off. Switch off the breaker.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
