Refrigerators & freezers
Ice maker stopped making ice
Before blaming the ice maker itself, rule out the water supply and the freezer temperature. Both are behind a good share of these calls.

Safe checks before you book
- Is it switched on?. Most ice makers have a wire arm, a switch or a setting in the control panel. Make sure it is in the on position.
- Freezer temperature. Ice makers usually need the freezer at about −15 °C or colder before they cycle. Check it with a thermometer.
- Water supply. If the water dispenser is weak or dead too, check the wall valve is fully open and the filter is not overdue. A clogged filter starves the ice maker.
- Look for a jam. Ice can freeze into a solid block in the bin or around the ejector. Empty the bin and look for ice stuck in the mould.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Water inlet valve | If no water reaches the mould, the inlet valve or its supply is usually at fault. |
|---|---|
| Frozen fill tube | A small tube carries water into the ice maker. If it freezes solid, the ice maker cycles with no water. |
| Ice maker module | The motor, sensor or heater inside the unit can fail. Many are replaced as one assembly. |
| Freezer too warm | If the freezer itself is warm, the fix is the freezer, not the ice maker. |
When to stop and call
Water leaking from the dispenser area or behind the fridge. Turn off the supply valve and book.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
