Safe checks before you book

  1. Hot water at the sink. Run the kitchen tap until it is hot before starting the dishwasher, so the first fill isn't cold.
  2. Filter and spray arms. Clean the filter and lift out the spray arms. Clear any blocked holes with a toothpick.
  3. Loading. Tall items can block the spray arm or the detergent door. Spin each arm by hand with the racks in.
  4. Detergent and rinse aid. Old, clumped detergent cleans poorly. Fresh detergent and rinse aid make a visible difference.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

Circulation pumpWeak or no spray pressure from a failing wash pump.
Heating element or thermistorWater that never gets hot enough.
Inlet valveA valve that lets in too little water.
Detergent dispenserA door that doesn't open, so detergent stays in the cup.

When to stop and call

Not urgent, unless the dishwasher is also leaking or tripping the breaker.

What the visit costs

The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
