Dishwashers

Water left in the bottom of the dishwasher

A small puddle of clean water in the sump is normal on many models. A pool of dirty water after a full cycle is not.

Safe checks before you book

  1. Clean the filter. Most dishwashers have a twist-out filter in the floor of the tub. Remove it, rinse it under the tap and scrub off grease.
  2. Sink connection. If the dishwasher drains through the garbage disposal, run the disposal first. A new disposal can still have its knock-out plug in place.
  3. The drain hose. Look under the sink for a kinked hose. It should loop up high before connecting to the drain.
  4. Air gap. Some kitchens have a small chrome cap on the sink. Pull the cover off and clear any debris.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

Clogged filter or sumpFood debris, glass or labels caught in the sump. Usually cleared on the visit.
Drain pumpThe pump hums without draining, or is silent.
Check valveA stuck valve keeps water from leaving or lets it flow back in.

When to stop and call

Water spreading across the kitchen floor. Turn the dishwasher off and close its supply valve under the sink.
