Dryers

Dryer squeals or squeaks while it runs

A high-pitched squeal that rises and falls with the drum is almost always a worn moving part in the drive system, not the motor itself.

Safe checks before you book

  1. Empty it and run it. Run the dryer empty for a minute. If the noise stays, it is the dryer, not a zipper or coin in a load.
  2. Note the rhythm. A squeal once per drum turn suggests a roller or glide. A constant squeal suggests the idler pulley or motor bearing.
  3. Turn the drum by hand. Unplugged, rotate the drum slowly. Roughness or a dragging spot is worth mentioning when you book.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

Idler pulleyKeeps the belt tight. Its bearing wears and squeals; the most common source.
Drum rollers or glidesSupport the drum. Worn rollers squeal or thump with each turn.
Drum bearing or rear shaftOn some models the back of the drum turns on a bearing that dries out.
Motor bearingsLess common; the motor itself starts to whine.

When to stop and call

If the squeal turns into grinding or a burning smell, stop using it: a seized pulley can shred the belt or overheat the motor.
