Dryer grinding, scraping or rattling

Grinding is the noise to take seriously: something metal is rubbing, and running it longer usually makes the repair bigger.

Safe checks before you book

  1. Check the drum. Look for coins, screws or underwire caught in the drum holes or the lip of the door opening.
  2. Lint trap housing. Small objects can fall past the lint screen into the housing and rattle in the blower.
  3. Stop if it's metal-on-metal. Don't keep running it to 'see if it goes away'.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

Worn glides or front bearingThe drum rides on worn pads and rubs the front panel.
Object in the blower wheelA coin or clip caught in the fan rattles and can crack the wheel.
Failed rear drum bearingGrinding from the back of the cabinet.

When to stop and call

Any metal-on-metal grinding. Stop and book.
