Dryers
Dryer thumps or bangs as the drum turns
A rhythmic thump usually means a support part has a flat spot or has worn through. Occasional bangs are often a shoe in the load.

Safe checks before you book
- Rule out the load. Run it empty. Thumping that stops with no load was the load.
- Check it's level. A dryer that rocks on its feet can bang. Adjust the legs so it sits firmly.
- Listen at front and back. Noise at the front points to glides; at the back, to rollers or the rear bearing.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Flat-spotted drum rollers | Rollers develop flat spots and thump once per turn. |
|---|---|
| Worn front glides or bearing | The drum drops and rubs at the front. |
| Damaged belt | A belt with a damaged section slaps as it passes the pulleys. |
When to stop and call
Metal-on-metal grinding or a drum that has dropped and scrapes the front. Stop and book.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
