Dryers
Dryer keeps running or overdries clothes
A dryer that runs long after the clothes are dry usually has a timer or sensor problem, which wastes energy and wears fabrics.

Safe checks before you book
- Try a timed cycle. If timed cycles end correctly but sensor cycles don't, the moisture sensing is at fault.
- Clean the sensor bars. Wipe the two metal strips inside the drum with rubbing alcohol.
- Timer knob. On mechanical dryers, watch whether the timer knob advances during the cycle.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Moisture sensor | Coated or disconnected sensor bars can't detect dryness. |
|---|---|
| Timer motor | On mechanical timers, the motor that advances the dial fails. |
| Control board | The board fails to end the cycle. |
When to stop and call
If it runs continuously with the door open, unplug it: the motor relay may be stuck.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
