Dryers

Dryer stops partway through the cycle

A dryer that runs for a while and then stops is often protecting itself from heat. The other common cause is the motor's own thermal protector.

Safe checks before you book

  1. Feel the outside vent. Weak airflow traps heat inside the dryer, which trips its safety controls.
  2. Does it restart after cooling?. If it runs again after 20–30 minutes, overheating is the likely trigger.
  3. Sensor-dry cycles. On sensor cycles, coated moisture sensors can end the cycle early. Wipe the metal bars in the drum.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

Restricted ventingOverheating trips the high-limit or the motor's thermal protector.
Motor overheatingA worn motor runs hot and shuts itself down.
Moisture sensor or controlThe control ends the cycle because it misreads the load as dry.

When to stop and call

The dryer cabinet is hot to touch or there is a burning smell. Stop and unplug it.
