Safe checks before you book

  1. Test with water. Heat a cup of water for one minute. It should be clearly hot.
  2. Door closes firmly. Door switches cut power to the heating side.
  3. Over-the-range models. Note the model number; parts vary.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

MagnetronThe part that makes the heat.
High-voltage diode or capacitorCommonly fails with the magnetron or alone.
Door switchPrevents heating when it fails.

When to stop and call

Sparking, a burning smell or smoke. Stop it, unplug it, and don't open the cabinet.

What the visit costs
