Microwaves & range hoods
Range hood fan or lights not working
Fans and lights in hoods fail separately. Grease build-up is behind many weak or noisy fans.

Safe checks before you book
- Filters. Clean greasy filters; heavy grease starves the fan.
- Bulbs. Replace the bulbs before assuming a switch problem.
- Power. Check the switch or breaker that feeds the hood.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Fan motor | Hums, runs slowly or stops. |
|---|---|
| Switch or control board | Buttons don't respond. |
| Damper | A stuck backdraft damper makes extraction weak. |
When to stop and call
Burning smell from the hood. Switch it off at the breaker.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
