Ovens, ranges & cooktops
Oven door stays locked
Ovens lock the door during self-clean and until they cool. A door that stays locked hours later usually has a lock motor or switch problem.

Safe checks before you book
- Let it cool fully. Several hours after a self-clean.
- Power reset. Turn off the breaker for a minute, then back on.
- Lock setting. Check a control lock isn't on.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Door lock motor or switch | The common failure, often after a self-clean. |
|---|---|
| Temperature sensor | The oven thinks it is still hot. |
| Control board | Doesn't release the lock. |
When to stop and call
Don't force the door; it can break the lock mechanism.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
