Refrigerators & freezers
Frost or ice building up in a frost-free fridge
Frost-free fridges shouldn't collect frost. Where the frost forms tells you whether it is a door seal letting humid air in, or a defrost failure.

Safe checks before you book
- Frost near the door. Points to a gasket or a door left ajar.
- Frost on the back panel. Points to the defrost system.
- Ice in the bottom of the freezer. Often a blocked defrost drain.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Door gasket | Torn or shrunken seals. |
|---|---|
| Defrost heater, sensor or control | The coil never defrosts. |
| Blocked defrost drain | Water refreezes in the bottom. |
When to stop and call
Cooling is failing as the frost grows. Book before food warms.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
