Refrigerators & freezers
Refrigerator buzzing, clicking, rattling or squealing
Fridges make normal sounds: gurgling refrigerant, cracking ice and the ice maker filling. Grinding, loud buzzing or a squealing fan are not normal.

Safe checks before you book
- Where is it coming from?. Inside the freezer points to the evaporator fan; the bottom back to the condenser fan or compressor.
- Ice on the fan. If the noise comes from the freezer and there is frost on the back panel, a fan may be hitting ice.
- Is it level and clear?. Rattles often come from the drain pan or something touching the back.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Evaporator fan motor | Squeals or chirps, often louder when the freezer door opens. |
|---|---|
| Condenser fan | Rattling from the bottom back. |
| Compressor or start relay | Loud clicking or buzzing every few minutes. |
| Ice maker | Buzzing when it tries to fill with no water. |
When to stop and call
Clicking with the fridge warming up. Book soon: the compressor may not be starting.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
