Washers

Washer drains but won't spin

Clothes come out soaked. Sometimes it is just how the load sat in the drum; sometimes it is a belt, a lid switch or the motor control.

Safe checks before you book

  1. Balance the load. One heavy item, like a bath mat or a single pair of jeans, can stop a modern washer from spinning to protect itself. Redistribute and spin again.
  2. Is it draining?. A washer that can't drain won't spin. If water stays in the tub, start with the draining guide.
  3. Listen. A motor that runs while the drum doesn't turn suggests a belt or coupling. A washer that does nothing at spin points to a switch or the control.
  4. Check it's level. Rock the machine by its corners. A washer that rocks may stop spinning when it detects vibration.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

Lid switch or door lockIf the washer can't confirm the lid or door is closed, it won't spin.
Belt or drive couplingWorn or broken drive parts on belt-driven and direct-drive top-loaders.
Motor control or speed sensorOn front-loaders, the board or sensor that controls the motor can fail.
Worn suspensionDampers and springs that let the tub bang around can make the washer abort its spin.

When to stop and call

Loud grinding or banging at spin. Stop the cycle; continuing can damage the bearings or the tub.
