Dryers
Dryer too hot, or a burning smell
Treat this as a safety problem first. Lint is very flammable, and a dryer that runs too hot usually has a blocked air path or a failed control.

Safe checks before you book
- Stop and unplug. Don't run it again until the cause is found.
- Look for lint build-up. Check behind and under the dryer and around the lint trap housing for heavy lint.
- Check the vent run. Look for crushed foil duct behind the dryer and a blocked hood outside.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Blocked vent or duct | The most common cause of overheating. |
|---|---|
| Failed cycling thermostat | The heater stays on because the control that should cycle it has failed closed. |
| Heating element shorted to the housing | On electric dryers, a grounded element can heat with the dryer off. |
| Worn belt or motor | A burning rubber smell can be a slipping belt or a stalled motor. |
When to stop and call
Any burning smell, smoke, or scorched clothes. Unplug it and book. If there is smoke or flame, call 911.

What the visit costs
