Dryers
Signs your dryer vent is blocked
A blocked vent makes every load take longer, wears out heating parts early and raises the fire risk. It is also one of the cheapest problems to fix.

Safe checks before you book
- The two-towel test. Dry two damp towels on high. If they aren't dry in about 40 minutes, airflow is likely restricted.
- Outside hood. With the dryer running, the flaps should open fully and air should push strongly. Clear lint, nests or snow.
- Duct behind the dryer. Crushed foil or vinyl duct is a common choke point; rigid or semi-rigid metal duct is safer.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
What usually causes it
| Lint build-up in the duct | Builds up gradually over years, faster with long runs and many bends. |
|---|---|
| Crushed transition duct | Pushing the dryer back against the wall flattens flexible duct. |
| Blocked hood | Birds, wasps or a stuck damper. |
When to stop and call
Overheating, a burning smell or a hot cabinet. Stop using the dryer until the vent is cleared.

What the visit costs
The diagnostic is free when you approve the repair and it's completed. You get the cause, the parts, labour and total in writing before any work. If you don't go ahead, it's $89 + tax for a home electric appliance, or $149 + tax for a gas appliance.
