Washers

Washer roars, grinds or bangs during spin

A roar like a jet engine on spin is the classic sign of worn tub bearings. Other noises have cheaper causes, so it is worth separating them.

Safe checks before you book

  1. Check the drum. Coins and underwire can lodge between the drum and tub and rattle.
  2. Turn the drum by hand. Unplugged and empty, a rumbling or gritty feel suggests bearings.
  3. Noise during drain only. A buzzing or rattle while draining points to something caught in the pump.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.
