Top-load washer fills but won't agitate

If the tub fills and then nothing moves, or the motor runs while the agitator stays still, the drive parts between motor and agitator are the usual cause.

Safe checks before you book

  1. Lid switch. Most top-loaders won't agitate with the lid open; test with the lid closed firmly.
  2. Listen. A motor humming with no movement suggests a coupler or clutch; silence suggests the switch or control.
  3. Agitator dogs. On two-piece agitators, the top turning freely one way is normal; spinning freely both ways is not.
Unplug first. Switch off power (and close the water or gas supply where it applies) before looking behind or inside an appliance. If anything feels unsafe, stop and call.

What usually causes it

Motor coupler or drive beltWears or breaks to protect the motor.
Agitator dogs or cogsSmall plastic parts that wear.
Shift actuator or lid switchOn many direct-drive models.
Transmission or motorBigger repairs, priced against replacement.

When to stop and call

A burning smell from the motor. Stop the cycle.
